<image:caption>Illusions of Fear watercolor on paper 2025 Course: Concepts & Practices II Project: Watercolor Watercolor The students in this class began the semester by learning the basics of research in art and design, after which they chose a topic that was researchable and appropriate in scope for the semester. In the Watercolor project, each student applies their research to the skills, working methods, and processes covered in this unit. Objectives for this project include learning basic watercolor painting techniques, split-primary color theory, and communication of their topic through the medium of watercolor painting on paper. Each student’s work for this project uses the same materials and techniques, but the paintings are all unique because their topics are all self-guided. (Concepts & Practices II is the second of two foundations classes.)</image:caption>

For this unit they had to introduce an outside element - either narrower research or some unexpected topic - into their ongoing research. The result of their research is expressed through machine sewing, hand stitching, and sewing-related processes. The students support each other through in- process feedback and table-team working. Students discuss the work of Annette Messager, Yin Xiuzhen, Brian Jungen, Yinka Shonibare, and others in preparation for their work. Each student’s work for this project uses the same materials and techniques, but the sculptures are all unique because their topics are all self-guided. Students each present to the class on one artwork by a performance artist and the students practice performance by recreating existing score-based performance works and through playful discovery in small groups. Each student presents one performance during the last week of the semester. At the time of this work, Concept & Practices II used the theme of “humanity” as a conceptual starting point for each project. The content of works for Playground addressed the slippery concept of “universal humanity.” (Concepts & Practices II is the second of two foundations classes.)</image:caption>

Focus is given to the ways that color schemes and Gestalt psychology help us understand form and meaning. This student’s tarot card was the Page of Wands. Math for Artists project Without knowing what they were for, students brought objects to class and added them to a table of objects. A selection process (AKA, white elephant) determined which object each student received. In Part 1: Subtraction students subtracted from their objects, in Part 2: Addition they added to their final piece from the first step, and in Part 3: Multiplication students used cardboard to recreate the objects, the meaning, and/or the emotional affect of the work from Addition. Each of these three creative actions (subtraction, addition, and multiplication) were driven by conceptual and formal concerns. The students also titled each of the three pieces. Mural proposals needed to use split-primary color mixing and address an ideological structure. Kay Rosen, Byron Kim, Maria Loboda, and Alma Thomas were key artists for this project. This assignment was described in detail in my 2021 article, Seeing and Reading Color: Resisting Hegemonic Power from Within a Foundations Art Classroom, published in Art Education, 74:5.</image:caption>

We discuss Kay Rosen’s essay, The Center is a Concept, and the students create a proposal for a mural that includes a watercolor mock-up and a written text. This is an excerpt from this student’s written proposal: “Marked is a mural that contradicts the issues of body positivity and common messages shown in the body positivity movement. While body positivity is overall seen a good thing, it too often does appear to be focused on the idea that having confidence in one's body coincides with power, pride and sexual prowess. This mural aims to expose the more vulnerable and “taboo" parts of being overweight without the reactionary messages that plague the body positivity movement, and instead aims for a softer, almost romanticized approach. Across three separate weeks during the semester, the students documented and collected every artist, designer, architect, and creative maker they were shown in all their courses. At the end of the semester the students discussed how to parse the identities (gender, age/deceased, race, and nationality) of the collected creative makers and went to work on compiling the data on who they had been shown in their classes. After investigating data visualization works by Xiaoji Chen, Jason Salavon, Mona Chalabi, and W. E. B. Du Bois, the students then used their data as source for Adobe After Effects data visualizations. The moving clouds in the above animation were created to represent the percentage (roughly 75%) of white artists and designers that were shown during week two of the semester. The clouds are obscuring the university’s DEI statement.</image:caption>

Most students conceptually use the abject to talk about taboo or hard to talk about subjects, such as objectification and stereotypes. For this class students had to make a full-round sculpture that was at least 24” x 24” x 24”.</image:caption>

Students could choose to map themselves (who they are) in any manner. We viewed a slideshow of related contemporary and historic artworks, read an excerpt from You Are Here: Personal Geographies and Other Maps of the Imagination, and discussed both in conjunction. In small groups, students also took part in an in-process critique and I had multiple individual meetings with each student.</image:caption>
